ATACAMA RESIDENCES

Atacama Residences is shaped by a deeply personal journey through one of the most extreme landscapes on earth. Drawing inspiration from the rugged beauty and quiet clarity of the Atacama Desert in Chile, the building translates solitude, restraint and elemental contrast into a refined architectural expression. Based in North Brisbane, the design balances minimalism with warmth, pairing raw material honesty with sculptural form. Off-form concrete is used as the primary material, referencing the desert’s unadorned character, while gentle curves soften the building’s edges and introduce a sense of movement. These are carefully contrasted with sharper geometries that frame views and define the overall silhouette. Custom-designed aluminium window hoods and screens provide solar shading while creating a dynamic façade that shifts with light and shadow throughout the day. Internally, the ten residences are planned with functional elegance at their core. Floor plans maximise natural ventilation, orientation and spatial clarity, offering openness without sacrificing privacy. Generous balconies are conceived as true outdoor rooms, supporting entertaining and connection to Brisbane’s subtropical climate. Oversized openings and generous ceiling heights enhance natural light and reinforce a calm, expansive internal atmosphere. Shared amenities include an exercise room and a large communal outdoor terrace with BBQ, dining facilities and integrated television, encouraging social interaction and outdoor living. Throughout the project, a restrained palette of earthy tones, tactile textures and muted finishes reinforces the architectural narrative. Atacama Residences is a spatial translation of lived experience that introduces a refined modernism to North Brisbane.
