Alexandra Headland SLSC

Elevation Architecture were delighted to assist Alexandra Headland Surf Lifesaving Club improve and expand their facilities to allow more space for their burgeoning membership. In keeping with the best of the relaxed Sunshine Coast lifestyle, we designed an expansion to both the north and south side of the existing building. The northern extension included an expansion of the upstairs Lookout Bistro and the downstairs Bluff Bar. Passive design elements were included to increase efficiency whilst also retaining the existing Norfolk Pines. The Norfolk Pines were planted by members of the club, so it was important to retain them. Inside the club the kitchen was expanded, and the main bar was widened allowing seating to be increased by a third. The extension on the southern side of the building allowed the gaming room to be re-positioned and expanded.

Elevation were challenged to design a lightweight, flexible and relatively low cost multipurpose community centre for Burke Shire Council. The site’s remote location and harsh climatic context were further design challenges.

Our response is to incorporate passive ventilation and lightweight design in a modern and innovative way. Large covered deck areas provide flexibility and a sense of permeability. Internal spaces are flexible in nature and can be used as a gallery, a library, and for council meetings.

El Kanah Marysville

Surrounded by lush vegetation and majestic mountains, El Kanah is the place to go and escape life’s pressures. El Kanah sits on 12 acres of land with magnificent views and is only a short trip from Melbourne through the beautiful Yarra Valley. El Kanah Marysville re-opened in 2013 after the original El Kanah was destroyed during the January 2009 fires.

Warm and inviting, its architectural language is instantly recognisable to both local and visitors. The El Kanah design features 23 bedrooms and conference facilities, with scope for future expansion. Materials, textures and rich colours have been combined to create an earthy and relaxing environment perfect for rehabilitation. Undoubtedly, the new El Kanah will become a cherished local landmark for years to come by all locals and visitors.

In order to increase the amazing work Luther Heights Youth Camp does amongst the community of the Sunshine Coast, a masterplanning venture was sought with a vision to “create a kickass place for kids!”. With the challenge of looking through a child’s eyes, we have partnered with the Lutheran Youth of Queensland to develop a plan for the growing future of the campsite. Currently, the campsite can accommodate 246 campers, but with plentiful space and opportunity, the masterplan seeks to double the available accommodation to 430, all while maintaining a fun, coastal campsite experience.

Surrounded in native vegetation and boasting vast coastal views, the campsite’s masterplan places utmost importance on maintaining the natural environment and the unique experience that camping amongst the rugged coastal landscape offers. The planning also takes great consideration to the flexibility of the building layout, allowing large groups to feel connected and smaller groups to still maintain privacy. The masterplan will take place over a number of years and we look forward to the ongoing role in this exciting development.

Mount Gravatt Youth & Recreation Club

The Mount Gravatt Youth and Recreation Club (MGYR) received funding from both Federal and State Departments for the design, construction and project management of a two indoor court complex and car parking. Elevation provided both design and project management capabilities, including reporting to relevant departments in meeting and maintaining the funding criteria.

The project experienced a minor delay due to wet weather experienced in Brisbane at the time, however variations associated with these delays were processed effectively and enabled the project scope to be completed within the allocated funding and on time, with no impact to the Complex’s scheduled Official Opening.

Elevation are actively working with the Client in sourcing Grants in support of Stage (2) of their complex and have indicated that our Project Management skills and expertise are beneficial to the success of their projects.

The scope of this project involved extensive refurbishment to several spaces, including the entry foyer, kitchen facilities, Sunday school room and meeting spaces, in conjunction with new signage throughout.

A major priority was to transform the entry foyer into a warm and welcoming environment. In order to achieve this and to create a visual cue to the church’s identity, we introduced timber veneer panelling, a reception desk and a back lit cross which would be viewable from the prominent Ann Street. This project was vastly successful in creating flexible spaces to accommodate various purposes, activities and user groups within the church.

As there was an event which was scheduled, majority of the works were to be completed within a short timeframe. Our collaborative efforts with the builder and Fitout team facilitated in overcoming this constraint. We were able to overcome the difficulty of using concrete-look tiles in the foyer, by having the builder grind the slab down in addition to grinding the tiles down, prior to laying them. We believe this completes the elegant look of the space.

The desired project objectives and deadlines were achieved, which was facilitated through consistent dialogue and close collaboration with both the Client and Contractor throughout the design, documentation and construction processes. We have received fantastic feedback from church members, who are thrilled with the outcomes of the refurbishment.
